Tight, groovy, and funky as the day is long, this 1978 number by Venus Gang is pure fun. No politics or controversy here,  just a phat, raw beat, and sexy female vocals about stars making love and loving to fly. Imagination takes care of the rest. Disco keyboard and rhythm section work a’la Quincy Jones, meets a dubby clubby vibe that anticipates more contemporary nightclub music, and gives some of today’s producers a bit of schooling, I’d have to say. Ok, I know it’s only December 1st tomorrow, but I’m starting the party early. This redonkulous remix of Dean Martin’s version of Jingle Bells is so wrong, it’s right! Oakland, CA’s dynamic duo of Loren “Tallswest” Tolman and Yohannes Skoda, collectively known as MAVRIK, have become a respected force in the exceedingly cre8ive San Francisco Bay Area hip-hop scene. Drawing heavily from their roots in the East Coast, Kenya and India, MAVRIK’s music is refreshingly original, with as much care put into the instrumental arrangements as to the beats and vocals. The lyrics are worldly and conscious, touching on some of the heavy issues that plague humanity, but opting for a courageous and positive tone rather than the apocalyptic resignation often favored when this sort of subject matter is tackled. This particular song is more of a party track than some of their more topical material, but it is shot through with their uplifting message of personal liberation and community solidarity. Oh, and it totally f’ing rocks the dancehall.

Weapons, which deals with the same juicy subject matter as this entertaining Styles Of Beyond rant: shady show promoters! The ill kind, you know, the ones who promise you money and don’t pay. They have excuses, it was this, it was that, but no, fool. The artists drove out here play to your gig, and the gas and lodging isn’t paying for itself, and you gave your word, and “fuck you, pay me.” Of course, there aren’t any songs about the honest promoters, are there? Dramatic headline, yes, but I had to get your attention. For the record, K’Naan is the real deal. The exploding buzz around this young Somalian expatriate is entirely justified by the quality of his output. His music is fearlessly original and widely accessible, with lyrics that are nothing less than profound. You’d never guess that English is K’Naan’s second language, but indeed, he mastered it by studying and emulating the hip-hop and rock artists that he loved as a kid. Check his media rich website, and illuminating wikipedia article for some background. This mp3 is gr8, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg. This is a major, major talent, and he’s going to be a big star. For all the right reasons.

It’s hard to imagine a more hyper-contemporary form of popular music right now than reggaetón. Drawing extensively from reggae and dancehall, and merengue and cumbia, AND hip-hop and electronica, reggaetón is truly an international musical fusion. Yet the beats, up-to-the-minute digital production and (usually) Spanish rapid fire lyrics make the music instantly recognizable. To the uninitiated, it might sound like the world turned upside down and a giant party fell out. Check this amazing track by El Rubiote from the “Reggaeton Hits 2007″ comp, for a taste. Did I really just find a new track by The Bar-Kays?! I did? Pinch me! I have a special place in my heart for this legendary Memphis band. Starting their run in the mid 60’s backing Otis Redding and other GR8 singers on Stax Records, the Bar-Kays ultimately influenced the evolution of soul, R&B, funk and rock and roll music, while overcoming some unimaginable tragedies along the way. This recent single is true to form, with that easy solid groove, luscious keyboards, and rapturous horn lines and vocals that put them at the top of the charts repeatedly – and as a footnote, won them a spot in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. This song has everything that is missing from the hyper-commercial pap of today. Sincerity and talent, to begin with. What a sweet lyric, and the rap bridge in the middle works perfectly. This music makes me smile.

Rocking the party all the way from the Ukraine, Flajzzza brings a truckload of musical influences from east and west to create their own exciting and unique take on hip-hop. This rocks – the music is so inventive and fun, and the lyric flows are brilliant, not that I understand a word of it, but “I’m So Glad” sounds positive enough!  This is truly international pop, with elements of dancehall, jazz, modern rock and 70’s latin funk a’la Eric Burdon and WAR. It all fits together seamlessly and wouldn’t sound more contemporary if it came out next week. I love the Interfishnets.

One of the oldest songs in the book, rewritten and reconsidered by poets and songwriters since the dawn of language, still a new and raw story to everyone who feels it firsthand. How fly do ya want it? Hip-Hop has, in its relatively short life, spread throughout the globe and spawned independent practitioners in nearly every language. This tight little track apparently has lyrics in English, French, and Russian (are there more?!) but don’t let that put you off. It holds together seamlessly, and the hooks and music are so compelling I just have to share. Musically fun yet sophisticated, and at the highest production value for this medium, this is international, up to the minute pop.

I love the way Jamaican and American popular musics have informed and influenced each other over the decades. Going back to the early 1960s when ska bands built on stateside soul and R&B sounds, and fast-forward to hip-hop and dancehall styles trading ideas and themes at a dizzying pace.  Heavyweight Dub Champion is hip-hop, and dancehall, and electronic dance, and reggae, they are all of that, and yes they bring their own original flavor to the mix as well. Oddisee makes a bold statement indeed on “Hip Hop’s Cool Again” but he backs it up! This is a highly personal statement, but one that anyone with a little imagination can relate to. Boasting is nothing new to hip-hop, but it is so often dreary and empty, some fool yelling I’m the sh!t, mine’s bigger, blah blah.
