You can tell a lot from a title. Mindless Self Indulgence is a promising artist name, as is “Never Wanted To Dance” an intriguing song title. But it’s not quite what you’d expect, and definitely NotSafeForWork, my dears. Think Nine Inch Nails goes berserk at Tears For Fears’ house. Hyper-lustful decadent aggro alterna-porn. Good fun.

It opens with this funky post-disco trip from Spaceflight Orchestra, and it’s just the thing to help one depart for a minute from any form of seasonal stress. Tight, groovy, and funky as the day is long, this 1978 number by Venus Gang is pure fun. No politics or controversy here,  just a phat, raw beat, and sexy female vocals about stars making love and loving to fly. Imagination takes care of the rest. Disco keyboard and rhythm section work a’la Quincy Jones, meets a dubby clubby vibe that anticipates more contemporary nightclub music, and gives some of today’s producers a bit of schooling, I’d have to say. Delicious track.

SuperFan goin’ all ‘lectronicoid on ya again, with some pure electronic dance music. I was intrigued by the title and stark album artwork here – this is one of those random discoveries, and I’m glad I stopped to check it out, it’s fun stuff. As is often the case in this genre, one must be patient at first. “Piotun” starts with a mere skeleton, and you think, hey, I could do this on a laptop in my sleep, why is this a record? But the piece soon reveals itself, with a magnificent primal synth bass part that could compel a brick to boogie, before atmospheric cinematic gongs and blips complete the trance inducing picture. This kind of thing works so well in a nightclub setting. Or, you know, at home, with friends, pretending your pad is a nightclub. I do it all the time. Why not? Ravers, rave on.

It seems Lee “Scratch” Perry’s musical evolution will never stop. Jamaican music innovator number one, Perry has from the early 60’s to the present been a core author of the operating systems for ska, reggae, and dub, spawning myriad sub-genres and altering the perceptions and priorities of generations of fans and musicians world wide. Quite a resume. Now on, like, his ten thousandth LP or something, “madman scratchy” has a new release on the lovely Narnack Records label. This track, a wild riff on Perry’s already wild “Having A Party” which I posted earlier, is closer to a dubby downtempo or house vibe than the Reggae based work he’s most famous for. But the unique voice and mind bending take on life are instantly recognizable as no one else’s. Here’s holiday music of a kind I promise you, you have never heard before. Santa Claus is coming, so catch Scratchy on his short US tour they just announced, and be good!

Ok, I know it’s only December 1st tomorrow, but I’m starting the party early. This redonkulous remix of Dean Martin’s version of Jingle Bells is so wrong, it’s right! Dj Subverse brought this to my attention last week, and it has worked its colors into my gray matter. In the lush, synthetic universe, inhabited by Bear In Heaven, anything can happen. The arrangement of “Wholehearted Mess” is surprising at every turn, with each bridge, verse and chorus opening a new door. An unusual and inspired chord progression, expressed in bold strokes on saturated, pitch-melting keyboard patches, frames a sweetly understated vocal magnificently, and it all adds up to, well, a wholehearted mess. Lovely, original work.

San Francisco DJ and producer Egadz! has bent beats and busted boundaries for about a decade, and he’s calling it.. quits? Sort of, his l8est release, “Egadz is Dead” is a farewell to his current moniker, with a promise of new projects to come. Why do I care? Well, because his music is brilliant and I’ll be fascinated to see where it goes next. Gaining the kind of peer respect that Egadz! has done already is no easy feat in the fast moving and highly critical world of electronic music. I think the essential reason for his success is the compositions themselves. Check out “Going Home” for example. Almost classical in its tonal language, there’s a care and love put into every detail of the beats, melodies, sounds, and overall production that you don’t always hear in this genre. Frankly, a lot of electronic producers can be perfectly lazy, setting their filter sweeps and beats and walking away and going “Wheee! I made music!” Not so with more the dedicated and cre8ive practitioners. Egadz is Dead. Long live Egadz!

It is impossible for a song to live up to its title better than this one does. What an impeccable track. I can’t get it off of repeat! Dramatic headline, yes, but I had to get your attention. For the record, K’Naan is the real deal. The exploding buzz around this young Somalian expatriate is entirely justified by the quality of his output. His music is fearlessly original and widely accessible, with lyrics that are nothing less than profound. You’d never guess that English is K’Naan’s second language, but indeed, he mastered it by studying and emulating the hip-hop and rock artists that he loved as a kid. Check his media rich website, and illuminating wikipedia article for some background. This mp3 is gr8, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg. This is a major, major talent, and he’s going to be a big star. For all the right reasons.

Electronic club music has gone through countless changes and spawned a world of sub-genres since the word “rave” was first coined, and the “dubstep” genre is the undisputed rage in 2009. The unearthly undulating square waves and filters in this track evoke images of trying to dance on a floor that wont stay put. Like a collision of Fela Kuti’s afrobeat style and distinctly west coast house music,  “Bole Bantu” is a lovely ‘zample of the borderless nature of music. Give this a minute to start – it’s a good beat, but you could easily expect a fairly stock house loop that goes on forever like some of them do.  This track does something else entirely. It grows and expands in natural yet unexpected directions, making for a highly satisfying aural journey. Excellent work, energetic, driving and smartly arranged.

It’s hard to imagine a more hyper-contemporary form of popular music right now than reggaetón. Drawing extensively from reggae and dancehall, and merengue and cumbia, AND hip-hop and electronica, reggaetón is truly an international musical fusion. Yet the beats, up-to-the-minute digital production and (usually) Spanish rapid fire lyrics make the music instantly recognizable. To the uninitiated, it might sound like the world turned upside down and a giant party fell out. Check this amazing track by El Rubiote from the “Reggaeton Hits 2007″ comp, for a taste. I love the 808 acid sound. I thought that about a year ago we were going to see a revival of the old techno favorite. Paying homage to 80’s funk as much as 70’s disco, Sugar & Gold’s “WorkOut Vinyl 12″ is some all grow’d up party music, children. State of the art production values and a sexy cool lyric, make this music solidly contemporary and eliminate “retro” from my genre tags. Sporting shades of KC & the Sunshine Band and Prince, “Do It Well” is a fun, unpretentious song, and impeccably assembled track. Acid Girls, though you might like to think of them as girls on acid, are in fact, boys in a recording lab. I say “lab” because the old image of a recording “studio” doesn’t apply here. You know, the suited men with their cigarettes, poring over a score between takes in an acoustically engineered giant sauna looking room of fine hardwoods and huge double-paned windows. No, this is as post-modern a record as you can want – purely digital in every way, even the title is digital. And it kicks dance floor boo-tay. My feeling is, if you’re gonna sit around and play with bleeps and bops in the dark, you might as well go the distance and make a work as interesting and fun as this! Happy Friday all.

Rocking the party all the way from the Ukraine, Flajzzza brings a truckload of musical influences from east and west to create their own exciting and unique take on hip-hop. This rocks – the music is so inventive and fun, and the lyric flows are brilliant, not that I understand a word of it, but “I’m So Glad” sounds positive enough!  This is truly international pop, with elements of dancehall, jazz, modern rock and 70’s latin funk a’la Eric Burdon and WAR. It all fits together seamlessly and wouldn’t sound more contemporary if it came out next week. I love the Interfishnets.

The Pinker Tones represent the state of the party art in Barcelona, hipness capital of Spain. Filtering a huge range of influences, they expectorate shiny globules of innovative pop glee. Also known as Professor Manso and Mr Furia, longtime vets on their thriving local scene, the PT’s now make their irreverently joyful music available to the world via Interweb. They have several promotracks up, and honestly, I had a hard time picking one to post today, as they’re all brilliant and each one is unique in its own way. Dengue Fever’s soundtrack record for the new documentary Sleepwalking Through the Mekong features music they created on a recent tour of Cambodia, backing singer Chhom Nimolon.  Cambodia in the ’60s and ’70s, before the disastrous Khmer Rouge regime, enjoyed a reinvented rock n’ roll style with distinctly Khmer influences, generating a sound that was unique and powerful in its own right. Silenced but not forgotten during the terrible events of the late 70’s, this brilliant music is now being rediscovered and revitalized by new generations. I picked up the soundtrack – a bestseller already on IODA – and I look forward to the movie.

Note – this is the top seller on the IODA album chart right now – which, to me, is a much bigger deal than being on the Billboard charts at this point. Because while teh numbers are still relatively smaller than what the big labels are putting up, the fact is indie product thru IODA is increasing their catalog and sales numbers, while blockbuster product thru the cartel distros of yesterday continue to shrink.  Yes your Superfan watches with interest and participates with glee, as the old monopolized music industry rots within its own castle walls, and outside an indie coalition grows a loooooooong tail. But I digress, my dear readers. Black Moth Super Rainbow is good sex music. There. Better? Good.

Hmm. You want to hear a beautiful new female pop voice? Look no further than Natalie Walker. The musical arrangement here is just exquisite and her voice is one in a million. I like Natalie as much for what she does with her voice, as for what she doesn’t do. A common malady in radio-friendly pop these days is to over-emote, and drench every line with so much inflection that style becomes gimmick and whatever song lies underneath is buried. No so so with this lady. Walker sings with boatloads of style, but it is a symptom of the meaning and the feeling of the song she is singing. She doesn’t have to overstate anything, because the work is good, the craft and art are brilliant, so there’s nothing to gloss over.

As I listen to this on repeat, I like it better each time. And I realize what has been bugging me about so much pop music lately, is that it’s become a cover-up, a sham, an imitation of itself. You can auto-tune a few hooky lines and cram it on top of a half-decent composition and fool half the people half the time these days, maybe because they’ve been starved for good new music for too long. Which is where my passion comes in: I truly love finding something like this, and sharing it with as many people as I possibly can. Adult contemporary without being dull, alternative modern without being stupid. Check it out.
